Prince Andrew Makes Sh0cking Announcement That He Will Give Up Royal Titles amid Epstein Accusations

Prince Andrew has announced that he will no longer use his royal titles or honors, saying ongoing allegations surrounding him have become a distraction from the work of King Charles and the royal family.

In a statement released by Buckingham Palace on Oct. 17, the 65-year-old said, “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family. I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.”

He added, “With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”

Removing his titles would formally require an act of parliament.

Impact on Family Members

Andrew’s former wife, Sarah Ferguson, will also discontinue the use of her Duchess of York title and will be known simply as Sarah Ferguson in all aspects of her life.

Despite these changes, the former couple will remain at Royal Lodge on the Windsor Castle estate, where Prince Andrew has a private tenancy with The Crown Estate. It is also understood that Prince Andrew will not take part in the royal family’s Christmas celebrations this year.

Their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, will retain their titles and are not affected by the decision.

Prince Andrew, styled “His Royal Highness” from birth, was granted the titles Duke of York, Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh by Queen Elizabeth upon his marriage to Sarah Ferguson in 1986. The title Duke of York is historically reserved for the monarch’s second son and has deep roots in royal tradition dating back to 1474.

Among his highest honors, Andrew is a knight of the Order of the Garter, though he has not participated in public ceremonies associated with the order in recent years.

Epstein Scandal and Public Fallout

The announcement follows renewed public scrutiny over Andrew’s association with Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender who died in prison in 2019. Prince Andrew stepped back from royal duties in 2019 after a controversial BBC interview addressing his relationship with Epstein.

In January 2022, Queen Elizabeth stripped him of his military titles and royal patronages after a U.S. judge allowed Virginia Giuffre’s lawsuit against him to proceed. Andrew settled the case privately.

Recent reports also surfaced of a 2011 email in which Andrew allegedly told Epstein, “It would seem we are in this together,” raising further questions about the nature of their continued relationship.

Emails involving Sarah Ferguson calling Epstein “a steadfast, generous and supreme friend” also resurfaced, despite her previous claims that she regretted accepting money from him.

Royal Appearances and Public Standing

Although he has remained largely out of the public eye, Andrew has occasionally joined the royal family at private events such as funerals and religious services. However, reports indicate that he and Sarah will not be invited to the Sandringham Christmas gathering this year as King Charles wishes to avoid further controversy.

A source close to the King said, “You can’t sack someone from being your brother. But this year, if the duke and duchess were both to be as honorable as last year, it would be very much for the best.”

Prince Andrew’s diminished status was also evident during Queen Elizabeth’s 2022 funeral, where he was not permitted to wear his military uniform.

A Changing Role Within the Monarchy

Biographer Andrew Lownie, in an interview promoting his book Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, claimed that Prince Andrew has struggled with the loss of his royal identity. “What most annoys him is his lack of a royal status,” he said. “That’s what really sort of gave him his whole sense of identity.”

While Andrew maintains his innocence, the official end to his use of titles marks a dramatic turn in royal history and underscores King Charles’ determination to protect the monarchy’s image in the face of ongoing scrutiny.
