King Charles III and Queen Camilla landed in Rome for a landmark state visit, but despite the significance of the occasion, royal watchers found their attention drawn elsewhere when photos of the couple disembarking the plane were released.
A Symbolic Journey to the Vatican
On Wednesday, 22 October, the monarch and his consort arrived in Rome to begin their official visit to the Vatican, where they are set to meet Pope Leo XIV. The visit marks a major diplomatic moment, underscoring the relationship between the Church of England and the Catholic Church.
Their two-day visit coincides with the Papal Jubilee, celebrated every 25 years, and will include a formal welcome by the pontiff later today. This will be Charles and Camilla’s first meeting with Pope Leo XIV since his election in May. King Charles has previously met three former popes: Pope Francis, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope John Paul II.

Royal Fans Distracted by a Familiar Figure
While the arrival was steeped in historical significance, fans were quick to notice Lieutenant Colonel Johnny Thompson, the King’s equerry, known informally as his right-hand man. Johnny, who gained unexpected fame online, once again captured public attention.
Social media lit up with excitement as fans enthusiastically posted their reactions:
“I spy Johnny!” one user exclaimed.
“I see Johnny!” added another.
“Ooo – hello Johnny!” chimed a third.
Others simply called out his name or admitted their eyes were fixed on him rather than the royal couple. One fan commented, “It is nice to see them both… But so nice to see Johnny there (cough) watching over them.”
The Reluctant Royal Heartthrob
Despite being affectionately labeled a “heartthrob” by online admirers and described as “major eye candy,” Johnny Thompson has reportedly been uncomfortable with the attention. His popularity first surged in 2018 when he served as bodyguard to the late Queen Elizabeth II. Preferring to stay out of the public spotlight, he took on a quieter role afterward.
However, he made headlines once again in 2022 when he was frequently seen alongside King Charles at royal events, earning renewed admiration for his composed demeanor and sharp appearance.
A Trusted Presence Behind the Scenes
Over the years, Lieutenant Colonel Thompson has been a key figure at royal engagements, attending major events including King Charles’ coronation and the royal visits to Northern Ireland, Germany and France.
In 2022, he was promoted to ‘super equerry,’ a role that reportedly involves increased responsibility behind the scenes and less public visibility—though it seems royal enthusiasts are not ready to let him fade from the spotlight just yet.
