Harry’s hidden message to William in essay about ‘what it means to be British’

Prince Harry’s heartfelt new essay about his love for Britain has ignited speculation that he may be sending a quiet message of longing — not only to his wife Meghan Markle, but also to his estranged brother Prince William.

The 41-year-old Duke of Sussex, who stepped away from royal duties and relocated to California with Meghan in 2020, published the 647-word reflection ahead of Remembrance Day on November 11, titled “The Bond, The Banter, The Bravery: What It Means to Be British.”

Honoring Service and Sacrifice

In his piece, Harry reflected deeply on his connection to Britain and his pride in serving his country during two tours in Afghanistan.

“Every November the world, for a moment, grows quieter. We pause, together, to remember,” he wrote. “Remembrance has never been about glorifying war. It’s about recognising its cost: the lives changed forever and the lessons paid for through unimaginable sacrifice. It’s also about honouring those who, knowing that cost, still choose to serve.”

He urged readers to remember not only “the fallen, but the living,” adding that veterans who carry the “weight of war” deserve to be reminded that “their service still matters.”

Despite his life in Montecito, Harry made it clear that his affection for Britain remains steadfast.

“Though currently I may live in the United States, Britain is, and always will be, the country I proudly served and fought for,” he wrote.

He also celebrated the unique spirit of British camaraderie: “The banter of the mess, the clubhouse, the pub, the stands — ridiculous as it sounds, these are the things that make us British. I make no apology for it. I love it.”

A Hidden Message for Meghan and William?

According to body language and communication expert Judi James, Harry’s nostalgic tone may reveal deeper feelings of homesickness and even regret.

“Ex-pat Harry writes in a style of deep nostalgia for the country he left,” James told The Mirror. “Despite his constant declarations of love for his life in the US, Harry sounds like a man still yearning for what he calls the ‘banter of the mess, clubhouse, pubs, the stands.’”

James suggested that Harry’s emphasis on “banter” might even be a gentle message to Meghan. “Most ex-pats miss tea bags or Marmite, but Harry is letting everyone know — including Meghan — that he misses a kind of shared, complex humour that he might not find in the US.”

She added that Montecito “always looks like a banter-free zone,” noting that Harry seems “much more in his element” during events like the Invictus Games, surrounded by ex-military friends and the camaraderie he craves.

James also hinted that the essay could carry a quiet message for Prince William. “Harry was a man who grew up and cut his teeth on banter, especially with his brother William,” she said. “By using that word so emphatically, he may be unconsciously expressing how much he misses his older brother.”

A Fractured Brotherhood

Harry and William have been estranged for years, reportedly not speaking during their most recent encounter at their uncle Lord Robert Fellowes’ funeral in August 2024. Their previous public interaction was at Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022.

Their rift dates back to 2016, when William allegedly expressed concern over the speed of Harry’s relationship with Meghan — a tension that only deepened before the couple’s departure from royal life.

Interestingly, Harry recently confirmed that he has no plans to become a US citizen. During a podcast appearance with comedian Hasan Minhaj, he said: “Am I going to become a US citizen? There are no plans to be, at this point.”

His words, paired with his emotional reflection on Britain, have left many wondering if Harry’s essay is not just about remembrance — but also a heartfelt acknowledgment of everything, and everyone, he left behind.
