Queen Camilla’s ‘tension’ and ‘anxiety’ during Trooping the Colour ‘revealed’

As the British royal family marked King Charles’ official birthday during the traditional Trooping the Colour ceremony on June 14, all eyes were on Queen Camilla — and some viewers may have sensed that not everything was entirely smooth behind the scenes.

From carefully adjusting her outfit to holding onto her hat during the carriage procession, the Queen Consort’s behavior sparked conversation, including from commentators who noted signs of visible discomfort. Gyles Brandreth, covering the event, even observed that Camilla seemed “a little anxious” about maintaining her composure — and her hat — in place.

Subtle Signs of Discomfort?

Body language expert Darren Stanton, often referred to as the “Human Lie Detector,” offered his analysis of Camilla’s expressions during the broadcast. Speaking with Royal Insider on behalf of Spin Genie, Stanton suggested that although Camilla managed the situation gracefully, there were clear non-verbal cues indicating tension.

One such cue, he noted, was what professionals call a “masking smile” — a smile that doesn’t truly reflect inner emotions.

“Camilla’s smile didn’t reach her eyes,” Stanton explained. “When someone smiles authentically, you see movement around the eyes — crow’s feet, relaxed muscles. But her smile appeared polite, possibly used to cover up stress or distraction.”

The Hat That Stole Attention

While riding alongside King Charles from Buckingham Palace, Queen Camilla appeared to keep one hand on her hat, possibly bracing against the wind or ensuring it stayed secure. Though it may seem like a minor detail, Stanton believes it signaled something deeper.

“Her eyes were fixed inward,” he added. “Rather than engaging with the crowd, her focus seemed to be on managing a quiet internal dialogue — something along the lines of, ‘Just don’t let the hat slip.’”

These subtle behaviors, according to Stanton, suggest the Queen was very aware of the cameras — and possibly trying to minimize any visible fuss.

A Composed Response, Despite the Pressure

Despite the minor wardrobe distractions, Stanton was quick to emphasize Camilla’s professionalism. Even under pressure, she presented a composed image for millions of viewers across the globe.

“She could have removed the hat,” he said, “but that might have drawn even more attention — which she clearly wanted to avoid. Her response was calculated, respectful of the setting, and ultimately effective.”

Final Thoughts

While most spectators may have missed the subtleties, Camilla’s presence at the event highlights the pressures public figures face — balancing elegance, ceremony, and personal discomfort, all under intense scrutiny.

This moment might have passed quickly on screen, but to experts in non-verbal communication, it was a masterclass in subtle emotional management.
