King Charles is said to have very different dynamics with each of his sons. While his bond with Prince Harry has been strained for years, insiders claim that even with Prince William — his loyal heir and stand-in during illness — the relationship is far from flawless.
During Charles’ cancer treatment, William has been a constant presence, taking on additional royal duties and ensuring the monarchy runs smoothly. Outwardly, father and son appear to function as a strong team. Yet behind palace doors, their relationship has sometimes been anything but harmonious.
Heated arguments and ‘angry rows’
According to royal expert Rebecca English, loud disputes between Charles and William have occasionally been overheard by staff. “Harsh words have been exchanged in the past, angry rows permeating even the thickest castle walls,” she reported for the Daily Mail.
One source of tension has been professional disagreements, such as the future of the Royal Collection’s ivory treasures. William has advocated for destroying them, while Charles views them as important historical artifacts. The issue reportedly led to a “frank” exchange between the two.
A royal aide also described their bond as “tricky” and revealed that William rarely calls his father directly, instead going through the King’s private office to arrange conversations. Still, insiders stress that these clashes have eased in recent years, with both men adapting to their evolving roles.
Preparing for the crown
Despite the disagreements, William has represented his father on numerous occasions, earning praise for balancing his official duties with his private role as a devoted husband and father. Royal commentators believe the experience has only strengthened perceptions that he is ready to take the throne.
Katie Nicholl told The Mirror: “The crown will never have felt closer to the Prince than it does now. His father’s illness has been a stark reminder that it’s his turn next, and it may not be too far in the distant future.”
Fellow commentator Duncan Larcombe echoed that view, describing William and Kate as “the future of the monarchy.” Nicholl also highlighted the couple’s influence: “They are very aware of their roles within the Firm as well as how they can best utilize their phenomenal soft power.”
William, she added, has “mastered the all-important skill of diplomacy,” handling delicate visits to places like Ukraine and the Middle East without ever being accused of overstepping politically.
With Kate returning to public life after cancer treatment, the Prince and Princess of Wales are once again side by side at the forefront of the monarchy. As Larcombe noted: “William and Kate are at the forefront of the Firm, and have become the monarchy’s biggest asset. They have a pivotal role in ensuring continuity and calm, when at times there’s been anything but that behind the scenes.”
