Bedbugs at home: 5 tips to eliminate them without toxic products

Small but persistent, bedbugs can enter your home without warning. They bite, hide in the tiniest of spaces, and are notoriously difficult to remove. If you’re looking for a safe and effective way to get rid of them, there are some incredibly powerful natural solutions. Here’s how to restore peaceful nights without resorting to harsh chemicals.

Why are bedbugs so resilient?

Bedbugs have a remarkable ability to adapt. They feed on blood and hide in cracks, mattresses, and even behind electrical outlets. A female bedbug can lay up to 500 eggs in just a few months, making infestations spread quickly and become difficult to control.

While chemical treatments are available, they tend to be costly, harmful to your health, and ineffective over time. Fortunately, there are natural methods that can stop their spread and eliminate them.

5 Natural Solutions to Get Rid of Bedbugs

1. Steam: A Formidable Enemy

Bedbugs can’t withstand high temperatures. A steam cleaner heated to 120°C (248°F) can effectively kill them. Steam your mattresses, curtains, carpets, and any other hidden spots where they might be lurking.

Tip: Focus on mattress seams and furniture cracks.

2. Diatomaceous Earth: A Natural Insecticide

This natural powder, made of tiny abrasive particles, destroys the exoskeletons of bedbugs, dehydrating them in just a few hours. Sprinkle it under your bed, along baseboards, and in areas where bedbugs are likely to hide.

Caution: Always use food-grade diatomaceous earth to avoid respiratory risks.

3. Garlic and Essential Oils as Repellents

The strong scents of garlic and certain essential oils, such as lavender, tea tree, and eucalyptus, disturb bedbugs and disrupt their ability to navigate.

Bedbug Spray Recipe:

  • Mix 25 ml of lavender essential oil, 50 ml of tea tree oil, and 1 liter of water.
  • Spray on linens, mattresses, and suspicious corners.

4. High-Temperature Washing

Wash your sheets, clothes, and curtains at a minimum of 60°C (140°F) to kill any eggs and larvae. If possible, dry them on a hot setting.

Good to know: Place any infested items in an airtight plastic bag and freeze them for 48 hours to kill the bedbugs through freezing.

5. Seal All Hiding Places

Bedbugs love to hide in cracks and gaps. Seal any holes in your walls, repair baseboards, and use bedbug-proof mattress covers.

Preventing Re-infestation

  • Regularly vacuum sensitive areas, such as your mattress, sofa, and carpet.
  • Inspect used furniture carefully before bringing it into your home.
  • Check your luggage after staying in a hotel or traveling by train/bus.
  • Use bedbug-proof covers for your mattresses and pillows.

By using these natural methods, you can eliminate bedbugs for good and restore a healthy home—without relying on toxic chemicals!
