The combination of Rosemary and Cloves is a well-established, scientifically supported duo for stimulating the scalp and boosting hair growth.1 Adding Vaseline (petroleum jelly) introduces a sealing element, turning it into an intensive overnight mask designed to lock those powerful herbal compounds onto the scalp and hair shaft.

Warning: This is an extremely potent, heavy mask. Use in small amounts, and be prepared for a thorough wash afterward.
The Science Behind the Trio
- Rosemary: Contains properties similar to minoxidil (a pharmaceutical hair growth treatment). It works by strongly increasing blood circulation to the scalp, ensuring follicles receive maximum nutrients and oxygen.2 It is also an anti-inflammatory.3
- Cloves: Rich in the compound eugenol, a powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial agent.4 It helps cleanse the scalp of fungi and bacteria (reducing dandruff), while its stimulating nature further promotes blood flow and strengthens hair roots.5
- Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly): Acts as a heavy-duty occlusive barrier. While it doesn’t add nutrients, it creates a layer over the scalp and hair, preventing moisture and the active ingredients (Rosemary/Clove infusion) from evaporating, forcing the skin and hair to absorb them over several hours.
The Recipe: Intensive Hair Growth Mask
This recipe requires first creating a potent infused oil, and then mixing it into the Vaseline base.

Part 1: Rosemary & Clove Infused Oil
- Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup Carrier Oil (Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, or Castor Oil)
- 2 tablespoons Whole Dried Cloves
- 2 tablespoons Dried Rosemary Leaves (or 3-4 fresh sprigs)
- Method:
- Gently crush the cloves and rosemary slightly to release their oils.
- Combine the herbs and carrier oil in a small, heat-safe jar.
- Place the jar in a saucepan filled with a few inches of water (creating a double boiler).
- Heat on very low for 30 minutes to 1 hour (do not boil) to slowly infuse the oil.
- Strain the oil thoroughly through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove all particles.6
Part 2: The Vaseline Mask
- Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly)
- 1 tablespoon Rosemary & Clove Infused Oil (from Part 1)
- (Optional) 3-4 drops Rosemary Essential Oil (for extra potency)
- Method:
- Place the Vaseline in a small bowl.
- Add the infused oil.
- Using a spoon or small whisk, mix the ingredients vigorously until the oil is completely incorporated and the mixture is uniform. It will still be very thick and greasy.
How to Apply for Maximum Growth
Since Vaseline is occlusive, focus the application entirely on the scalp and roots.
- Section Hair: Part your hair into small sections to expose the scalp.
- Apply Sparingly: Using your fingertips, scoop a very small amount of the mask and gently rub it directly into the areas of your scalp where you want to promote growth (edges, crown, part). Do not use a lot, as a little Vaseline goes a long way.
- Massage: Massage your scalp deeply for 5–10 minutes to stimulate blood flow and help the mixture penetrate.7
- Cover & Wait: Cover your hair with a plastic cap or silk scarf and leave it on overnight (6-8 hours) for the most intensive treatment.
- Washing Tip: You will likely need to wash your hair twice with shampoo to fully remove the Vaseline base. Follow with a moisturizing conditioner.
Frequency: Use this intensive mask once a week.
