Former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau faces backlash after ‘disrespectful’ clothing choice during King Charles’ royal visit

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing criticism for what he wore during King Charles III’s recent royal visit to Canada.

King Charles and Queen Camilla arrived in Canada earlier this week for a two-day trip, during which the King officially opened Parliament on Tuesday, May 27.

In a historic address to the Senate in Ottawa — written based on advice from Canada’s new government — King Charles spoke about the serious challenges the country is currently facing.

“Today, Canada faces another critical moment. Democracy, pluralism, the rule of law, self-determination and freedom are values which Canadians hold dear, and ones which the government is determined to protect,” he said.

He also highlighted shifts in global trade and international relations:
“The system of open global trade that, while not perfect, has helped to deliver prosperity for Canadians for decades, is changing. Canada’s relationships with its partners are also changing.

“We must be clear-eyed: the world is a more dangerous and uncertain place than at any point since the Second World War. Canada is facing challenges that are unprecedented in our lifetimes.”

While King Charles’ visit to Canada was historic — being the first monarch in over 50 years to open parliament — much of the public’s attention shifted to Justin Trudeau’s unexpected choice of shoes.

The event called for formal attire, and most guests, including politicians, were dressed in suits and elegant outfits.

Trudeau also wore a shirt, tie, and blazer, but it was his shoes that got people talking.

The former Prime Minister showed up in bright turquoise Adidas Gazelle sneakers with bold orange stripes — a surprising pick for such a ceremonial occasion.

Some criticized the look as “disrespectful,” especially with the King in attendance.

“That seems a bit disrespectful,” one person remarked.

Another commented: “Not only is Justin Trudeau present at the throne speech, but he’s also rocking the most unexpected pair of shoes. I’ll just grab my popcorn and watch this unfold.”

A third questioned: “Did Trudeau really think those shoes were suitable for the Throne Speech?”

Someone else pointed out: “Check out Justin Trudeau’s footwear in Parliament today!”

And another added: “It’s shocking how unprofessional and disrespectful that looks.”

Not everyone was bothered, though. Someone commented that it wasn’t a major issue.

One person said, “The rest of us think they’re great.”

Another added, “I really don’t care which shoes Justin Trudeau is wearing.”
