Tips and Tricks

Found this on my son’s scalp. Have no idea what it is and we can’t get a doc appt soon

Finding a strange bump or patch on your child’s scalp can be worrying — especially if you can’t see a doctor right away. While only a healthcare provider can give a proper diagnosis, understanding a few common causes can help you manage things at home in the meantime.

Common Causes of Scalp Bumps

Many scalp issues can look similar, including:

  • Seborrheic dermatitis: Flaky, greasy patches that itch
  • Folliculitis: Red bumps from irritated hair follicles
  • Pilar cysts: Small, round lumps under the skin
  • Psoriasis: Thick, silvery scales caused by an overactive immune system

Scalp psoriasis is more common than many realize and often confused with dandruff or dermatitis.

What Psoriasis Looks Like

Psoriasis patches are usually:

  • Red, raised, and scaly
  • Itchy or sore
  • Found along or beyond the hairline
  • Sometimes lead to temporary hair loss

It’s not contagious, but it can come and go in flares.

Gentle Home Care Tips

While waiting for a diagnosis, you can try:

  • Coconut oil or aloe vera to soften dry patches
  • Diluted apple cider vinegar rinse (avoid if skin is broken)
  • Coal tar or salicylic acid shampoos
  • Avoid scratching and harsh hair products

Start with one treatment at a time and see how your child responds.

When to Call a Doctor

Seek medical help if:

  • Symptoms last over a few weeks
  • Your child is in pain or losing sleep
  • You notice swelling, pus, or bleeding

A dermatologist can confirm the cause and recommend treatment.

Find Support

Look into trusted sources like the National Psoriasis Foundation or online parent groups. You’re not alone — many families face similar challenges, and support can make a big difference.
