How to relieve joint, muscle and rheumatic pain with laurel infusion

Bay leaf — also known as laurel — has long been treasured across the Mediterranean, not just for its aromatic flavor in soups and sauces, but also for its soothing properties in folk medicine. Generations have turned to this humble plant for its power to ease joint pain, calm inflammation, and restore tired muscles.

In particular, bay leaf oil or infused alcohol has been traditionally used as a natural remedy for rheumatism, muscle tension, and poor circulation.

If you’re curious about how it’s made, here’s a time-honored recipe passed down through families for years:

What You’ll Need:

  • 30 grams of fresh bay leaves
  • 300 ml of 60% strength alcohol (such as rubbing alcohol or a neutral spirit)
  • A clean glass jar with a tight lid

How to Prepare the Bay Leaf Infusion:

  1. Tear the bay leaves into small pieces with your hands to release their natural oils.
  2. Place the leaves into a clean glass jar.
  3. Pour the alcohol over the leaves until fully submerged.
  4. Seal the jar tightly and store it in a warm, dark place for 10 days.
  5. After that, strain the mixture and transfer the infused liquid into a fresh glass bottle for use.

How to Use It:

Gently massage the infusion into areas where you feel joint stiffness, muscle pain, or inflammation. It’s especially helpful around the knees, back, and shoulders after a long day.

Note: This remedy is for external use only. Do not drink it, and don’t apply it to broken skin. Limit use to no more than a month at a time.

A Note of Caution:

This is a traditional home remedy and should not replace medical advice. If you’re experiencing chronic pain or inflammation, it’s best to consult a doctor or healthcare provider first.
