After making headlines for missing Royal Ascot last week, Kate Middleton has resumed her royal responsibilities—this time behind the scenes.
Private Meeting with Melinda French Gates
On June 25, the Princess of Wales and Prince William welcomed Melinda French Gates to Windsor Castle, as recorded in The Court Circular, the royal family’s official log of engagements.
The meeting, held under the banner of The Royal Foundation, focused on shared philanthropic interests. The Royal Foundation serves as the central platform for the couple’s work in areas like mental health, early childhood development, and other key causes.
Melinda, a prominent American philanthropist and founder of Pivotal Ventures, was previously co-chair of the Gates Foundation with her former husband, Bill Gates. Pivotal Ventures supports efforts to drive social progress for women in the U.S. and globally.
In 2024, her organization also partnered with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Archewell Foundation and the Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation to launch digital wellness programs for underserved young women in the U.S.
The Royals Stay Close to Home
The low-profile engagement took place not far from Adelaide Cottage, the family’s residence on the Windsor estate, where William and Kate live with their children—Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7.
Kate’s quiet return to work follows her unexpected absence from Royal Ascot on June 18. Her name had appeared in the published carriage procession schedule alongside Prince William for the second day of the prestigious event—only to be removed roughly 20 minutes later, prompting speculation.
Sources later clarified that Royal Ascot had mistakenly released an incorrect listing, and that the change was not due to a sudden decision by the Princess. Prince William still attended the event alongside King Charles and Queen Camilla.
Although Kate was reportedly looking forward to attending, she is prioritizing her well-being and taking careful steps as she resumes public duties following cancer treatment earlier this year.
Focusing on Recovery and Balance
“She’s being sensible, listening to what her body is telling her and easing back into public life,” said Ailsa Anderson, a former press secretary to Queen Elizabeth, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.
Before the private meeting with Melinda Gates, Kate’s most recent public appearance was on June 16 at the Garter Day Service at Windsor’s St. George’s Chapel. That event followed her much-anticipated return at Trooping the Colour on June 14, where she appeared with Prince William and their children.
