Listen to Your Body: Recognizing Early Signs of a Heart Attack

As we get older, looking after our heart becomes more important. A good place to start is by living a healthier lifestyle — eating better, staying active, and finding ways to manage stress. But another key part is knowing the signs your body might be giving you before a heart attack, sometimes even up to a month ahead.

Here are some symptoms to keep an eye on:

  • Shortness of Breath
If you’re often out of breath doing things that used to be easy, it might mean your heart isn’t getting enough oxygen. Don’t wait — get it checked out.
  • Cold or Flu-like Symptoms
It might sound odd, but feeling like you have a cold or the flu can sometimes show up before a heart attack. If it feels unusual or out of the ordinary for you, don’t ignore it.
  • Chest Pressure or Discomfort
Any kind of tightness, squeezing, or pressure in your chest is a serious warning sign. It’s best to see a doctor right away.
  • Weakness or Fatigue
If you feel weak or overly tired all the time, your heart might not be pumping blood as well as it should. This can be a red flag, so get medical advice.
  • Cold Sweats or Dizziness
Feeling sweaty or dizzy without a clear reason could mean poor blood flow — possibly related to your heart. Don’t brush it off.
  • Feeling Sleepy All the Time
If you’re getting enough sleep but still feel drowsy all day, it might be a sign your heart isn’t getting enough oxygen.
Bottom line:

Your body often gives you early warning signs — don’t ignore them. Taking action early can help prevent serious heart problems. Listen to your body, see your doctor when something feels off, and take care of your heart every day.
