Matthew McConaughey praised for his gesture to Prince William and Kate Middleton at Wimbledon

Matthew McConaughey may not be a royal, but his manners at Wimbledon certainly earned him a round of applause.

The Oscar-winning actor was among the star-studded audience at the men’s singles final, where Jannik Sinner made history as the first Italian man to win a Wimbledon title. As the match drew some of the biggest names in sport and entertainment, McConaughey found himself seated just behind Prince William and Princess Kate, who attended the event with their two eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Shortly after the royal family entered their box, fans took to social media to highlight a brief but meaningful moment: McConaughey stood as the royals arrived, a gesture not required of non-British citizens, but widely interpreted as a sign of respect. Viewers online praised the actor’s quiet show of etiquette, calling him “a lovely southern gentleman” and “a class act.”

One user on X wrote, “Matthew was raised right. Always something I’ve admired.” Others called him “the coolest man to ever live” and applauded his composure in the royal box.

Kate and William were later seen congratulating the players on Centre Court, where Kate presented the championship trophy to Sinner and the runner-up plate to Carlos Alcaraz. As the princess walked onto court, a spectator shouted “I love you, Kate,” prompting a warm smile from her as she interacted with ball boys and girls before the ceremony.

A royal encounter with a brave young fan

Before the match, the Wales family met with 11-year-old Ambrose Caldecott, who had recently completed chemotherapy treatment for bone cancer. Ambrose was selected to perform the ceremonial coin toss ahead of the final. During their brief conversation, Kate offered heartfelt encouragement.

“What a brave boy you’ve been. Good luck today, we’ll be cheering you on,” she told him.

Ambrose later shared what the moment meant to him. “We spoke about tennis, our favourite sports, what I went through last year and how it affected me,” he said. “She said she knew from her experience in my situation.”

Kate, who publicly announced her own cancer diagnosis in 2024, recently shared that she is now in recovery. Her return to the public eye, including appearances at Wimbledon and recent community visits, has been met with widespread support.
