Meghan Markle ‘In Tears’ As Royal Family Makes Brutal Statement

In their Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, Prince Harry revealed that Meghan Markle was left in tears after Buckingham Palace issued a joint statement in his name without his consent.

The incident happened in 2020, after reports emerged suggesting Prince William had “bullied” the Sussexes out of the royal family. Within hours, a statement appeared under both brothers’ names denying the claims.

The message read: “Despite clear denials, a false story ran in a newspaper today speculating about the relationship between The Duke of Sussex and The Duke of Cambridge. For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and harmful.”

Prince Harry said he was stunned to discover the statement had been released without his approval. He recalled: “Once I got in the car after the meeting, I was told about a joint statement that had been put out in my name and my brother’s name. I couldn’t believe it. No one had asked me permission.”

When he told Meghan, she broke down in tears. Harry explained: “Within four hours they were happy to lie to protect my brother, and yet for three years, they were never willing to tell the truth to protect us.”

Widening rift within the royal family

Harry described the moment as a turning point, showing how the institution shielded William while leaving him and Meghan exposed. “The saddest part of it was this wedge created between me and my brother so that he’s now on the institution’s side. I understand—that’s his inheritance, his responsibility to ensure its survival.”

The revelation formed part of the couple’s wider criticism of the Palace’s treatment of them, contrasting the swift defense of William with the lack of protection for the Sussexes.

Steps toward reconciliation — but doubts remain

Despite past tensions, there are signs of possible reconciliation. Reports say King Charles and Prince Harry’s aides held a discreet meeting at the Royal Over-Seas League club in London. Harry’s communications officer, Meredith Maines, met with Tobyn Andreae, the King’s communications secretary, for what was described as an informal discussion.

A source noted: “There’s a long road ahead, but a channel of communication is now open for the first time in years.”

Still, experts believe Prince William remains reluctant. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said the King would not have moved toward peace without William’s awareness but emphasized that William and Catherine are central to the monarchy’s future. Author Phil Dampier added: “The King is more anxious to patch things up than William, who I believe will never be close to his brother again.”
