Tips and Tricks

Mosquitoes used to eat me alive until I tried this.

For years, summer evenings meant one thing for me: mosquito bites. Sitting in the garden or simply opening a window at night would leave my legs covered in red, itchy marks. I tried everything—sprays, candles, creams—but nothing worked for long.

That was until I discovered a simple, natural, and surprisingly effective homemade remedy using ingredients I already had at home. This mixture not only repels mosquitoes but also leaves a fresh, pleasant scent in the air.

Ingredients

  • 300 ml warm water
  • 1 tablespoon dried peppermint (or a few drops of peppermint essential oil)
  • 1 tablespoon dried flowers such as lavender or chamomile (or a few drops of lavender essential oil)
  • 100 ml natural lemon juice
  • ½ tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 spray bottle (preferably dark glass to preserve the oils)

Step-by-Step Preparation

1. Make the base infusion

  • Heat 300 ml of water until lukewarm (do not boil).
  • Add the peppermint and dried flowers.
  • Cover and steep for 10–15 minutes to release the aromas.

2. Strain the liquid

  • Use a fine sieve to remove herbs.
  • Ensure no solid residue remains, as this can clog the spray nozzle.

3. Add the other ingredients

  • Pour the strained infusion into a clean container.
  • Add 100 ml lemon juice and ground cinnamon.
  • Mix well until the cinnamon is fully dissolved.

4. Optional: enhance the aroma

  • For a stronger scent, replace or combine the herbs with peppermint or lavender essential oils.

5. Transfer to the spray bottle

  • Use a funnel to pour the mixture into your spray bottle.
  • Shake well before each use.

How to Use

Spray on:

  • Doors and windows
  • Bedding
  • Curtains and carpets
  • The air in closed rooms
  • Inside your car or around seating and sleeping areas

Extra Tips

  • Storage: Use within two weeks. Store in a cool, dark place.
  • Fabric test: Spray a small, hidden area first to check for staining (especially due to cinnamon).
  • Customize the scent: Try adding rosemary, eucalyptus, or orange for variety and enhanced repellent power.

Since using this natural preparation, I haven’t had a single mosquito bite at home. It’s safe, affordable, easy to make, and leaves the house smelling wonderful.

If mosquitoes have been ruining your summer nights, give this recipe a try—you may never go back to store-bought repellents again.
