Old Dog Sent Back to Shelter for Being “Boring”— Rescuers Find Out the True Reason

It’s always uplifting to hear about shelter dogs finding new homes, but sometimes these stories don’t end as happily as we’d hope. This was the case for Honey, a senior husky, who was returned to the shelter shortly after being adopted. The reason? Her new family found her “too boring,” as they were expecting a more active and engaging pet.

This wasn’t the first time Honey faced abandonment. Previously, her owners of five years had to give her up because their child was allergic to dogs. Her latest return to the shelter was even more critical because she was taken back to a kill shelter, a place where her life was at immediate risk if she didn’t find a suitable home quickly.

Fortunately, Honey’s plight caught the attention of Husky Life Rescue, who took her in within 24 hours of her being surrendered. What they found was both shocking and sad. After a proper check-up, it became clear why Honey seemed so uninterested in her surroundings. The vet discovered that Honey was actually about 15 years old, much older than previously thought, and she was suffering from several health issues that had gone undiagnosed.

The vet’s findings were startling. “Her liver and pancreas were elevated quite high. She does have a UTI and respiratory infection,” explained Husky Life Rescue in a Facebook post. These health problems were significant, making it understandable why Honey lacked energy and enthusiasm—she was simply not feeling well.

Despite the grim initial outlook, Honey’s health began to improve with proper medical care. She was diagnosed with pancreatitis, among other conditions, and started on the right medications. The rescue shared an uplifting update: “She’s doing much better in just two days,” according to veterinarian Dr. Y, who spoke to FOX 13.

Honey’s recovery also addressed her kennel cough, which the rescue’s veterinarian was treating for. Given the extent of her health issues and the need for a stable recovery environment, Husky Life Rescue decided that Honey wasn’t ready for adoption just yet. She needed more time to heal and adapt to her new life circumstances.

The story of Honey challenges and misunderstandings that can arise with older or ill pets in the adoption system. Often, what might seem like behavioral or personality issues are actually signs of underlying health problems. Thanks to the intervention of Husky Life Rescue, Honey is now receiving the love and care she needs to live out her senior years in comfort and with dignity. Her story is a reminder of the compassion and dedication needed to change the fate of animals like her.
