A decades-old image of Princess Diana with a young Prince William at Wimbledon has recently resurfaced online—and it’s stirring up some rather bizarre speculation.
Comparisons to Prince George at Wimbledon
The photo, taken back in 1991, shows Diana and her eldest son watching the famous tennis tournament. But in light of Prince George’s recent appearance at the 2024 Wimbledon Men’s Singles Finals, people are now comparing the old snapshot to current images of William with his own son.
On Sunday, July 13, the Prince and Princess of Wales were spotted in the stands with Prince George, 11, and Princess Charlotte, 10. Their youngest, Prince Louis, was absent—though at just seven years old, he’s still younger than both of his siblings were when they made their Wimbledon debut at age eight.
Social Media Speculation: ‘It’s AI’
Some internet users aren’t convinced by the authenticity of the 1991 image. One person remarked, “If you zoom in, it’s blurry and her neck fades away. AI probably.”
Another wrote: “Definitely not Diana,” while someone else insisted: “Not William! Or his mum!”
Not everyone agrees with the conspiracy. One commenter replied, “Everything isn’t AI,” dismissing the claims entirely.
Another offered a more logical explanation: “I think her neck isn’t fading away, it’s the movement of her hand as she clapped which is making it look blurry.”
Someone else chimed in: “Her neck doesn’t fade away. Her hand is in the way, which happens to be moving (clapping), which means it’s blurred. It’s a photo from the 90s so cameras obviously couldn’t produce the sharpness we expect today.”
A final user made it crystal clear: “If you made use of Google you would know Diana did in fact take William to Wimbledon and wore that very outfit.”
The Truth Behind the Photo
The image in question is actually a genuine archival photo from Getty Images, taken on July 6, 1991, at Wimbledon. So no, it’s not AI-generated.
Still, not everyone’s convinced. Another comment insisted, “That’s not Princess Di or William.”
Prince William first attended Wimbledon at age nine, sitting beside his mother Diana in the prestigious Royal Box on Centre Court. Both he and Prince George followed royal tradition by dressing in suits for the match this year.
That said, not everyone is thrilled about the strict dress code. Many fans sympathized with Prince George, especially since Wimbledon often lands on particularly hot days. Back in 2022, he was overheard saying he was “too hot” during the match.
In that moment, William tried to comfort his son while Kate added, “You just have to feel for the people sitting in the bright sunshine.”
