Pilot’s ‘tragic final words’ on Air India flight suggest what went wrong as black box found

In a heartbreaking aviation disaster, Air India flight AI171, en route to London from Ahmedabad, crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12. Out of the 242 individuals on board, only one survived—leaving families across several nations in mourning.

A Journey Cut Short

The ill-fated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner took off from Ahmedabad Airport at 1:38 PM local time. The aircraft was bound for London Gatwick Airport on what should have been a routine long-haul flight. But within moments of liftoff, the aircraft lost altitude and collided with a hostel building on the BJ Medical College campus, ending in a fiery wreck that claimed 241 lives.

Air India released a statement confirming the grim toll:

“Of the 242 aboard, there are 241 confirmed fatalities. The sole survivor is being treated in hospital.”

The airline also clarified the passenger manifest, which included:

  • 169 Indian nationals
  • 53 British nationals
  • 7 Portuguese nationals
  • 1 Canadian national

Pilot’s Final Transmission

Preliminary reports indicate that the flight crew had just moments to react. According to the London Evening Standard, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kundar reportedly issued a desperate mayday call. The pilot is said to have radioed in, “no thrust… unable to lift,” when the aircraft was less than 650 feet above the ground.

Flight tracking data shows the aircraft lost contact mere seconds after takeoff, suggesting an immediate and catastrophic failure—possibly related to engine power.

Critical Evidence Recovered

One of the aircraft’s two black boxes has reportedly been recovered, according to Hindustan Times. These devices are vital to any crash investigation, as they contain both cockpit audio and flight data. Aviation authorities are hopeful this data will offer insights into the mechanical or procedural factors that contributed to the tragedy.

The Miracle Survivor

Incredibly, one man—identified as 40-year-old British citizen Vishwash Kumar Ramesh—escaped with his life. Seated in 11A, adjacent to an emergency exit, Ramesh somehow survived the inferno and chaos that ensued after the crash.

According to reports from Sky News, Ramesh managed to video call his family during the moments following the impact. His brother, Nayan Kumar Ramesh, said:

“He said, ‘Oh, the plane’s crashed. I don’t see any other passengers. I don’t know how I’m alive, how I exited the plane.’”

Dr. Dhaval Gameti, one of the doctors who treated Ramesh, noted that while he suffered multiple injuries and was disoriented upon arrival, he is now stable and expected to recover.

A Nation in Mourning, Questions Awaiting Answers

This tragedy has cast a shadow across continents. In India, the UK, Portugal, and Canada, grieving families await answers. Investigations led by aviation safety authorities are already underway, with both technical and human factors under scrutiny.

As the world watches closely, the focus now turns to understanding what led to this disaster—and how such tragedies can be prevented in the future. For now, one man’s miraculous survival stands as a small light amid a day marked by overwhelming loss.
