Prince Harry’s silence shows ‘cold war still persists in Royal Family’ – Expert

Prince Harry’s bombshell memoir Spare will soon be released in paperback – but unusually, not a single part of the book will be changed or updated to reflect the last year

Prince Harry’s decision to stay silent is ‘indicative of the cold war which persists within the Royal Family’, according to an expert.

It has been revealed that the Duke’s memoir, Spare, which first hit shelves in January 2023, will be re-released in two months in a paperback version. The tell-all book sent shockwaves around the world when it was first released with its claims about Prince William pushing Harry into a dog bowl and King Charles feeling jealous of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

It is common for a paperback version of a non-fiction book to have additional chapters or updated information when it’s released. However, the contents of the upcoming paperback release of Spare are “unchanged” – which royal expert and historian Dr Tessa Dunlop believes speaks volumes about Harry’s relationships.

She told the Mirror: “Those who suggest that this paperback release, with no additional material, is an olive branch, are sadly mistaken. New material can be conciliatory, Harry might have taken the lead and opened with a different prologue, fore-fronting his regret about how things turned out, and reiterating his good wishes for Kate and the King.

“That he has decided to stay shtum is indicative of the cold war which persists within the Royal Family. On the eve of his 40th birthday, there is little sign of a reconciliation. The uncomfortable stalemate persists. My hunch is that deep down Harry regrets some of what he has written, but like so many men, he is way too proud to admit it.”

Tessa says the unchanged text is “in line with the Duke’s pledge to move on from looking back”, and shows he is “playing a longer game”. She added: “Too much whinging does his brand no favours, and with cancer impacting both his father and sister-in-law Kate, now is not the time to have another pop.”

The re-release of Harry’s book comes as his wife Meghan Markle reveals her brand new business venture. The Duchess has invested in a female-run handbag company called Cesta Collective, which specialises in hand-woven bags. In a rare interview, Meghan revealed that she discovered the brand while online shopping as she spends a lot of time Googling “just looking for brands”.

The company specialises in bags, costing hundreds of dollars, that are handwoven by a group of women in Rwanda before they are sent to Italy to be finished off. Meghan was spotted toting one of the bags last May when she and Prince Harry were spotted heading to a restaurant near their home in Montecito for dinner with Hollywood A-listers Cameron Diaz and Gwenyth Paltrow.

After she wore the bag, the founders of Cesta Collective sent Meghan a thank you note and it was then that the Duchess offered to make an investment. In an interview with the New York Times about her investment, Meghan refused to say how much she had invested, although the brand owners confirmed it was a minority stake.
