Prince William makes rare comment on Charles and Diana’s divorce as he vows not to make ‘same mistakes’

Prince William has opened up about one of the most difficult chapters of his childhood, making a rare comment about the divorce of his parents, King Charles and the late Princess Diana.

Now 43 and a father of three, the Prince of Wales is determined to give his own children — Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven — the sense of stability and warmth he longed for as a boy.

During an appearance on Eugene Levy’s Apple TV+ series The Reluctant Traveler, William spoke candidly about creating a “normal” home life for his young family and reflected on how his own upbringing shaped that goal.

“I think it’s really important that that atmosphere is created at home,” he said. “You have to have that warmth, that feeling of safety, security and love. That all has to be there, and that was certainly part of my childhood. My parents got divorced at 8, so that lasted a short period of time.”

William’s parents’ marriage — and eventual divorce — played out under intense global scrutiny. The experience left a lasting mark. “You try and make sure you don’t do the same mistakes as your parents,” he admitted. “I think we all try and do that. I just want to do what is best for my children. But I know that the drama and the stress when you’re small really affects you when you’re older.”

Reflecting on the relentless media attention his family faced during his youth, William said the experience shaped how he now protects his wife, Kate Middleton, and their children.

“Growing up, I saw that with my parents. The media were so insatiable back then,” he recalled. “They wanted every bit of detail they could absorb. They were in everything, literally everywhere.”

Having witnessed firsthand the toll of that public intrusion, the future king made a promise to himself. “If you let that creep in, the damage it can do to your family life is something that I vowed would never happen to my family,” he said firmly. “And so, I take a very strong line about where I think that line is. Those who overstep it, I will fight against.”

For Prince William, it’s clear that history has shaped his outlook — not as a burden, but as a guide. His mission now is simple: to protect his family and ensure that the cycle of royal heartbreak does not repeat itself.
