Prince William’s ‘awkward’ reaction to Prince Andrew during funeral has royal fans making same point

A moment between Prince William and Prince Andrew at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral has caught public attention online, with many calling the interaction “awkward.”

Historic Funeral at Westminster Cathedral

On Tuesday, 16 September, mourners gathered at Westminster Cathedral for a Catholic requiem mass honoring Katharine Lucy Mary Worsley, Duchess of Kent. The service marked the first Catholic funeral for a royal in modern British history.

The Duchess, wife of the late Duke of Kent and cousin-in-law to Queen Elizabeth II, passed away peacefully at her Kensington Palace home on 5 September at the age of 92.

Among those present were Prince William and Kate Middleton, Princess Anne and Sir Tim Laurence, the Duchess of Edinburgh, and close family members of the Duke and Duchess of Kent. Queen Camilla was notably absent, recovering from acute sinusitis.

Andrew’s Rare Appearance

Prince Andrew, accompanied by his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, also attended the service. Though he stepped back from royal duties in 2019 amid the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, the Duke of York continues to appear at family occasions.

At one point, Andrew stood beside Prince William, where cameras caught a brief interaction that quickly circulated on social media.

The Clip Everyone is Talking About

In the short video, Andrew seems to say something to his nephew before laughing. William, however, appears unmoved — he gives only a curt nod, without smiling or responding verbally.

Social media users quickly weighed in. One described the moment as “so awkward,” suggesting that “Prince William doesn’t want to be anywhere near him.” Another noted: “William understands the importance of optics. He might have answered while rubbing his nose, but William made sure he wasn’t speaking with Andrew while the cameras were near. Wise William!”

A third joked: “Prince William: I know you didn’t just start small talk because the camera is on us? They won’t catch my mouth moving.”

A fourth observer added: “As family bid farewell at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral, Prince Andrew appears to want a chat with his nephew and says something he finds funny. William has no desire to respond. He doesn’t say a single word…”

Awkwardness or Respect?

Not all agreed with the interpretation. Some suggested William may have simply avoided smiling or laughing given the somber nature of the event.

Body language expert Judi James, speaking to MailOnline, suggested otherwise. “The Duke of York tries to engage his nephew in a good-humoured chat, and all William’s non-verbal responses suggest awkwardness and a subliminal desire to reject the overtures, making this look like a very frosty transaction.”

She added: “William is at some pains to appear polite despite potentially feeling compromised here, but he is clearly made uncomfortable and is perhaps relieved when he can return to the more solemn facial expression of mourning.
